Biblical studies have come leaps and bounds with discoveries from the last 150 years. These discoveries have cast doubt on certain church traditions while lending greater clarity to the meanings contained in the text. Interpreting any text is dependent upon the reader's ability to bring the writer's own context into their minds as they read. True Bible study must involve investigating the ideas contained in 2nd temple Jewish literature and the literature and cultural context of the Ancient Near East for the simple reason that the biblical documents originated or was primarily influenced from that environment.
